How to tell if your home has lead pipes

If your home hasn’t been modernised or was built before 1970, then your property could still contain lead piping. One-third of properties built before this time in the North West are still thought to have some sort of lead piping.

If you suspect your home may still contain lead pipes or if you’re unsure, there are a few signs you can look out for:

  • Lead pipes, if unpainted, are usually dark, grey and soft. You should even be able to scrape away a layer of the surface using a key or coin. If you do this and the layer beneath has a lighter, shinier metal coat, this is probably lead piping.
  • You can also try and tap the lead pipe with another metal object. If the sound is a dull thud rather than a clear ringing, then this could be another sign of lead piping.

You should be able to find these pipes leading to your kitchen tap or internal stop tap, possibly under the kitchen sink. Other possible materials your pipes could be are plastic, copper or iron. If you’re still unsure after trying this, North Staffs Utility Services can check for you.

How harmful is lead?

The UK government has banned the use of lead in numerous products. Previously lead was utilised for lots of things, like electronics as well as plumbing.

Over time, however, constant exposure to lead has been found to harm our health, especially with children under six and pregnant women.

Because of this, lead hasn’t been used for piping in the UK since 1970. It is advised to minimise exposure to all sources of lead, including drinking water.
